Depression And Anxiety Issues

Depression and anxiety are often a result of an accident or injury. Many of our clients suffer chronic pain and disability, impacting their ability to perform as they used to at home, in their family and in hobbies. Even if their accident happened a long time ago and they are mostly physically healed, they may experience emotional difficulties for a long time afterwards.

Making the situation worse is the fact that many people — including our clients themselves — believe they should be able to get over their difficulties, pull up their boots and go on with their lives. They are often advised to simply not “dwell” on their accident or injury, as if that will make the feelings go away.

Helping You Heal

At Azevedo & Nelson, our lawyers see many clients with depression and anxiety issues from an accident. This is more than merely feelings of sadness and nervousness: This is an inability to control feelings of profound misery and anxiety, to the point where it interferes with life. The symptoms may be so severe that they are unable to go to work, take care of themselves and their families, and resume the life they had before.

Some of the symptoms we often see are:

  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Stomach problems
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Difficulty controlling emotions
  • Sense of hopelessness and incompetence
  • Inability to concentrate when in the middle of an anxiety attack

We will help your doctors explain the symptoms and their effects on your life and connect the symptoms to your injury. We can also help explain the exact losses you have suffered, which may include time lost from work, lost job and advancement opportunities, difficulties at home and caring for your family, and a host of other health problems.

If you have a history of psychological issues, insurance companies will argue that the cause of your problems weren’t caused by the accident, but that you were experiencing problems beforehand. We can help to show that the accident has made the problems worse.
